I'm coming out of the proverbial "Oscar" closet!

Post  lloyd378 on 2014-08-30, 17:28

That's right..... i own an oscar!  No strike that, I own two as of today.  To start, I rescued a wonderful red oscar about a month ago.  took him out of qt last week, only to have him beat down by my midas and then placed back into my  hospital / QT tank.  So today, i went to a local fish store to grab some frozen krill.  they were having a deal on oscars.  buy two "Os" get one free (any size for same price)  i didnt take the deal, but i ended up with a lone 7" tiger (but has more red then traditional tigers) for half the price they normally are.  I placed him in my qt / hospital tank, but the red oscar wasnt having it.  so he moved to another tank.  here are some pictures of the new oscar and a short video of the interaction between the two of them in my hospital tank prior to his removal.

Hey dont blame me, you owned Oscars before! Good to see you back into them Lloyd.

I know they are pretty common but really it does not matter, you should own fish that make you happy and if its an Oscar more power to you! Spot On

I tried Oscars right after I lost my big midas but I was not ready to get attached so the whole process was nothing but a tank 'filler' which is a shame because that thing would have been a beast. It went from a 2" to 11.5" in a matter of six months and looked to not be slowing down. I think I could have ended up with a massive fish. But time heals all wounds and the right fish came along (Porkchop the pearsei) and made everything good again.

So with this last group buy I decided to jump back on the Oscar bandwagon and got one of the rare San Paulo Bumblebee Oscars from Rapp's.

Here he is:

The light gravel might be the reason. He will go dark on a darker substrate.

Oscars are great fish. I will get pictures of the Crassipinnis later and put them up. It is growing like a weed.

Im really interested to see the growth rate and final size of that Crassipinnis. Not a whole lot of info is found on them but its thought they are smaller than their ocellatus counterparts. But if the whole 10" full grown Crassipinnis is true, it would allow many more people to keep that fish.

so I found an old picture of cowboy and tombstone.....(cowboy was the tiger) i had to take a picture of a picture. the original picture was taken of them back in 99 while WE (oscars and myself) were attending CWU. I originally bought them in 97 in this mom and pop shop on south hill (right past 144th) They died within three months of each other in 2007. Cowboy was two when i bought him, and tombstone was 1.

I am posting up the same picture twice, incase one of the angles is easier to view

I remember that one, he was HUGE! But like we were talking about before, taking in someone else full grown Oscar is not the same as raising one up yourself.

Post  lloyd378 on 2014-08-31, 12:25

Did I ever share the story about when I was moving cowboy to a new tank back in college?  If not,  I was moving him from a 55 to a 75 upstairs in the hallway.  The hallway looked down into the hard wood floors.... You know where this is going...... Anyways, I decided to not use a net and instead move him from the bucket to the tank with my hands.  Being as how he was super mellow, he let me pet him: hand feed him all the time.

He came out of the bucket without a splash, but once I lowered him about 1/2 way in, he took off out of my hands and propelled himself out of the tank,, over the banister and down to the first floor. My room mate scooped him up and met me half way up the stairs .  He survived and lived another 5-6 years.  Only problem was that his dorsal fin, when fully extended looked like free willys....

I have 3 lemon/gold oscars in the QT room at the shop. I can't decide if I need to find them a home or take them home... I couldn't leave them at the wholesalers because they were looking so good/personable.

As much as I want the lemon, all my tanks are basically done with no more stock going in. I am even wondering if my 72g bowfront will be big enough for a full grown Oscar. I have an AC110 and Eheim 2217 on that tank and am thinking to overfilter even more by adding another AC110. Been keeping my eyes open for a 48" a 24" footprint, 100-120g for the little guy.

If he needs friends he has a place to go... he can hang out with Porkchop and the gang in the big tank.  Spot On
To me that tank is very comfortable with housing the four cichlids that are in there, they should all be able to reach their full potential and so far aggression is at a very low point with all the fish just getting along perfect. If the Oscar needs it he can go into the 210g but was hoping for a solo wet pet experience with him.

Speaking of upgrades... Where are you going to put your Oscars when they get bigger?  whistle
You are at that point where you need a couple 240's.... tongue
