Bettas... Why Am I Doing This (again)?! Empty Bettas... Why Am I Doing This (again)?!

Post  PokeSephiroth 2014-06-15, 01:06

Well, I've been bitten by the Betta bug, yet again. . . I got two new bettas from Aquarium Co-Op, and they're stunningly beautiful (I'll post pictures soon) . . . . I wanted to keep them in their own separate tank, like I do with my other Betta, but that's just not happening. So, I've converted an unused 15 gallon tank into a divided betta tank.

The tank is basically divided into three sections. The left most section will contain a betta, then the middle section will contain the filter, then the right section will contain another betta. This allows me to put a HOB filter in the middle, without agitating the water's surface so much. I've also "re-plumbed" the intakes to suck water from both sections, rather than just the middle section, which will help with water circulation (more on that later).

But for now, PICS!

- In this picture, you can see how I modified the intake, so that it would reach both ends, rather than just sucking up water in the middle section. I find that this should help with water circulation... Or not. I don't know. But I was feeling crafty =P The intake tubes basically get split into two ways, and then it just runs underneath the substrate, and pokes out on each end. (I still need to put intake pre-filter sponge things on them).

Here's how it looks with the sand and dividers (REALLY GHETTO LOOKING AT THE MOMENT. That will be changed, in the future, when budget allows).

So now I'm just waiting for the water to de-cloudify and all that fun stuff, before I add the two Bettas in. Very Happy I might have to add a prefilter in both intakes, first, I guess..... I GUESS....  haha

Thanks you two! Smile The filter is working out pretty well. Turns out that the out flow of the filter is so weak, it doesn't disturb the water's surface, even without the help of the plastic canvas. So I might add three bettas in there, instead of just two.

Or maybe I will just keep it at two bettas, and keep the middle section empty, that way they're not constantly flaring at one another. =P

Here are the pictures of the two Bettas in the divided tank, along with the third Betta I got a while back, that's currently residing in a 10 gallon tank.

I'd like to believe that the two in the divided tank, are Halfmoon Rose Tails... or something like that (Does that even exist? Or are they JUST Rose Tails?)

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And here is my "Halfmoon" Double Tail... now I know for sure that there's not such thing as a Halmoon Double Tail, but that's what I was told it was... I like to pretend that if the other two Bettas had a baby, this would be it. Hahaha!

Here's the whole tank... those dividers are GHETTO... I need something else. Someday. Someday.

Thanks for sharing pics of these guys. The term "rosetail" was new to me so that was very interesting to do the research and read all the various thoughts betta breeders have about this type of tail/finnage.

All your boys are handsome but your double tail male is my favorite. Great picture of him too Angelo.

They are beauties!  And nothing wrong with those ghetto dividers -- I use the same kind and they do a great job.  Plastic canvas and report cover bindings?  Very Happy

I as well use the same type of divider. Smile Not much different the store bought tank dividers that cost more! Lol Beautiful bettas! I'm choosing the blue one as my favorite Smile

Thanks everyone!!
Yeah I'm thinking of maybe heading to tap plastics to get something custom made for the dividers. I'm gonna have to save up for it though hehehe.

Now I'm starting to think that the two might not be rose tails, but maybe they're featherfin tails. Hmmmm.

Black dividers?? Nice, though they seem as flimsy as the normal white ones.

The first two bettas are nice, but the third is absolutely amazing!

Thank you! I'm so glad they're so beautiful! LOL

Oh yes, VERY MUCH SO... These things are so flimsy, they just don't work for me. But they get the job done, and I like the fact that they're black...so if any algae decides to grow on it, it'll be harder for me to see =P What makes things worse, is because the tank is so tall, I had to use two plastic canvas sheets to cover the entire height of the tank, which makes it even MORE flimsy. Hahahaha...

Did you get them at the store? If both are flimsy, I rather have black flimsy than that awful white.

I did get them at Aquarium Co-Op, yes.

And true...the black really does blend in much better than white plastic canvas Smile I got mine from Joann's Fabrics and Crafts store. I think Michaels also has them.

There was also plastic canvas that had slightly bigger holes, I wasn't sure if I wanted that, so I opted for the one I have now. I can't remember if the one with bigger holes was stiffer or not. Now I'm sorta regretting not getting the one with bigger holes. Hahaha!

I seem to be having much better luck with these three bettas. They're still alive *knock on wood*

Oddly enough, I've never noticed this before, but it seems like the fins of each betta is constantly growing. I swear they're getting longer. Just look at the ventral fins of this blue one. I've never seen a betta with ventral fins that wide before! (If you scroll up to my previous posts, you can compare the older pics with this one, and see how much they've "widened")
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This one's Caudal fin and Ventral fins are also getting longer. At first, I thought his colors were just fading, but I did some comparison shots, and realized that the fins were actually getting longer!
His ventral fins, although, not as wide as the other blue one's, but it's much slimmer and longer though!
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

And then there's this red guy. I swear, his Dorsal fin is getting bigger (taller) . . . whenever he flares, it's just mesmerizing to see!And he's a feisty one compared to the other two... eesh.

Here's an animated version (might take a while to load):

They are beautiful bettas and I love the fact you get all that superb flarring with them. Must be the fact that they can see the competition all the time (the males housed next to them) so it keeps them active. That's probably really good and healthy for them.

Post  PokeSephiroth 2014-07-18, 10:46

Thanks Donna! I actually don't have the males next to one another. The tank is divided into three sections and then I have a betta in the left and right sections. This keeps them from flaring at one another (this is for the red betta and blue betta)I do have female bettas in the middle section though, so they may be flaring at them. Then I have the red/blue/black betta is in a separate 10 gallon.

But what I usually do, to get them to flare, is use a mirror or anything reflective then I quickly take out the mirror and snap a burst of photos. :-D

see in petstoes and in shipping of them half moons tend to bite there fins because they are stressed. its not that ur bettas fins keep growing persay.. but they are just growing back Smile lovely bettas though
they would be considered over halfmoon rose tails as instead of them forming a large D when flaring its going above and beyond the straight D line Smile
sorry im getting all betta nerdy over here lol
